The title "Le cheval de bois" (wooden horse, rocking horse) refers both to his rocking character and to the wooden instrument, the bassoon, for which this work was specially composed. We walk through the composition on horseback, first in a slow draft tempo, then in a stirring canter section. As always, we return home with the starting theme. Both parts are characterized by one and the same motif, sometimes in the 12/8 measure, then in 4/4. Also available for trombone, euphonium, horn F and Eb, trumpet, basstuba Eb and Bb, clarinet and bass clarinet
