KLAAS COULEMBIER | M | PIANO |
The performer rolls a dice to determine the order of the eight different parts. He or she should do this in a theatrical way and on the surface of the piano. Then, he orders his sheets and starts to play all pieces one after the other. Maximum duration is approximately 10 minutes. If one decides to play a shorter version of the piece, one has to keep in mind that number 3 always follows number 2, and 6 follows 5. It is also desirable to begin and end with respectively numbers 1 and 8. A possible short version can thus be 1 7 5 6 8, omitting 4, 2 and 3.
Parts
- Discovering sounds and rhythms: Only one note (C) but a variety in tone colours and rhythms
- Two notes in the dark: Exploring one dyad through the whole register of the instrument
- Frictions: Subtle dissonances in a joyful game
- Chasing tetrachords: Four notes in a minimalist construction
- Between the white keys…: …lie some black keys
- Extremes: Not high and low, but very high and very low
- Symmetry: This scale consists of (almost) all major seconds
- Half steps, whole steps: The octotonic scale consists of eight notes as a result of alternating major and minor seconds
