PETER LEROY| GR2,5| FANFARE BAND|
Honourable mention International VLAMO composition Contest 2021 (Belgium)
Mayan Mysteries is a three-part work written by Peter Leroy. The first part echoes the once mighty Maya empire. Cities, roads, canals, pyramids and palaces were overgrown by the jungle over the centuries. Many still mysteriously hidden from the modern eye… The second part describes a ritual procession in which a human sacrifice is made to the Sun God Kinich Ahau who was supposed to protect the Maya from disease and drought. Yet it could not prevent the disappearance of the empire. How and why the Maya left their cities cannot be said with certainty. Was it war? Persistent drought? Their own prediction of the end times? An understated hymn in third part honors what was once one of the greatest civilizations on Earth: The Maya.
